Early Ed Assistant Teacher
Classification: Exempt
Hours: Full-time, 40 hrs/week
Location: King Street Center
Salary: $20 - $22 per hour
Position Overview
King Street Center is hiring for a Teacher in our Early Education program. Assistant Teachers support children ranging in age from 18 months to 5 years in building a love of learning and care for others, within an environment of mutual respect. All teachers support daily classroom activities, attend to children’s care and safety, and help maintain a welcoming learning environment.
Assistant Teacher: Works with lead teacher in an active role,supporting curriculum implementation, observing and evaluating student progress, and contributing to individualized support for children’s developmental needs.
Reporting Structure
Reports to: Early Education Director
Collaborates with: King Street Center program staff, visiting educators, community service providers, transportation providers, special educators, and medical professionals
Essential Roles & Duties
All Staff
Attend to the care, safety, and well-being of children at all times.
Support a program that is balanced in regard to active and quiet play, child-directed and teacher-directed, indoor and outdoor activities.
Set and enforce limits that are related to the child's level of maturity.
Promote independence by allowing children to solve their own problems.
Listen to children with interest, answer questions, and maintain a receptive attitude.
Confer with educators within King Street Center, social service agencies, volunteers, and visitors.
Open, close, set up, and clean up the classroom as needed.
Continue professional learning through workshops, Head Start trainings, and exchange of ideas with other programs.
Assistant Teacher (additional responsibilities)
Collaborate with lead teachers to design and implement curriculum that meets the needs of children based on observation and best practices; adjust teaching and provide individualized support as needed.
Document student growth and developmental progress using the Teaching Strategies Gold assessment tool; contribute observations and data to ongoing child assessments.
Demonstrate a sound knowledge of good teaching practices and child growth and development.
Observe, evaluate, and discuss student progress, developmental milestones, and concerns with lead teachers.
Identify and obtain appropriate learning materials.
Work with other professionals, including special educators and medical professionals, to address educational challenges.

Physical Requirements/Conditions of Work
Work is conducted inside and outside during all seasons. Must be able to be physically active, participate in gross motor games, and move distances to neighborhood sites.
Occasional lifting, up to 50 pounds.
Interaction with children and families.
Potential for injury from physical interplay with children, and for illness passed along from children.

What You’ll Bring
Education (one of the following):
High school diploma or GED; OR
Currently enrolled in an Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related program. OR
Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field; OR
CDA or comparable credential (i.e. Level I or II on Northern Lights Career Ladder) and at least 12 months experience working with children from grade three or younger; OR
Completion of the Fundamentals for Early Childhood Professionals Course and at least 12 months experience working with children from grade three or younger.
Note: For Assistant Teachers in Early Head Start, additional infant/toddler related credentials may be required.
Enthusiasm for learning on the job and growing within the role.
1–3 years of experience in some or all of the following:
Designing and implementing curriculum
Experience teaching in an early childhood program or working with children in some capacity
Meeting children’s emotional and behavioral needs
Handling complex issues with families
Working with other professionals to address educational challenges
