Youth Development Program Staff

Position Overview:

King Street Center is hiring now for our summer community youth development program that serves Kindergarten to 5th graders from Burlington’s BIPOC, immigrant and low-income communities. We are looking for full-time and part-time staff for the summer. The summer work schedule runs from June 16 to August 15.

K-5 Youth Development Program Staff supervise a classroom, implement engaging activities and foster an environment where children feel safe, happy and valued. Staff create meaningful relationships with children, and teach them new skills, while having fun at the same time. Program staff must be empathetic, self-motivated and eager to be a part of a collaborative team that is committed to the wellbeing of all children and families. This is a great opportunity if you are interested in a career in education, social services or community work. We provide professional development opportunities including Vermont licensure training.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement and supervise daily educational and age-appropriate activities and games for children.

  • Ensure health, safety and enjoyment of children in program. 

  • Teach children life skills, appropriate behaviors, and how to make good choices.

  • Support student behavior needs with oversight and support from Directors

  • Interact with children to resolve problems.

  • Support students with reading and math skills during academic time.

  • Maintain awareness of children’s participation and whereabouts.

  • Walk children to King Street Center from school at least twice a week

  • General “housekeeping” matters such as classroom clean up, and light facilities maintenance. 

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance

Qualifications:

  • Some life or work experience with BIPOC, immigrant and/or low-income communities 

  • High school diploma

  • Must pass a criminal background check through the VT Child Care Development Division and complete licensing required trainings (CPR/First Aid Training, VT orientation, Mandated Reporter)

Employment Details:

  • Pay: starting at $19 hour

  • Summer Program Hours: Monday to Friday 7:30am-6:00pm (full and part-time positions available)

Physical Requirements & Conditions of Work:

Work is conducted inside and outside during all seasons. Must be able to be physically active, participate in gross motor games, and walk distances to neighborhood sites. Occasional lifting of furniture, materials and children, weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasional interaction with children and families exhibiting some instability in their behavior. Some potential for risks to physical safety and security of the facility.  Potential for injury from physical interplay with children, and for illness passed along from children.
